Background
Rainbow Dash was offered entry to Wonderbolt Training in 2013. She immediately accepted and prepared to move back to Cloudsdale as a requirement. She was to start in July 2014. It seemed like smooth sailing, until something got in the way.
Dash's number one fan, Scootaloo, had gained her cutie mark, decimated a land speed record, and subsequently hospitalized in March. The staff discovered that she is legally no one's child and has illegally been living in someone else's home. By law, all foals must have a legal guardian. Ministry of the Home was called in to put Scootaloo back into foster carem but not before the Mane 6 stepped in. Scoot had been living with the Cakes and Pinkie at Sugarcube Corner, and the idea that Pinkie's family should adopt her came up. Rainbow argued that she was morally obligated to care for her. The fight between Pinkie and Rainbow escalated when Pinkie responded that if that were true, Rainbow would've taken her in when she arrived in 2008. Bickering ensued.
Eventually, the feud entered the courts. The stress of the breaking friendship, the move, and the trial began to change Rainbow Dash. She began to be more selfish than usual and even performs horrid acts, such as publicly denouncing Pinkie in front of the town and turning to blackmails and bribes. As the two went on, Scootaloo also began to break. The Cakes and Pies have supplied greatly for her, and Rainbow Dash is her idol. Choosing between the two proved to be difficult, and the acts of the two weren't helping.
The day before a hearing, Scootaloo confronts Rainbow Dash, who is near delusional from lack of sleep. It does not end well.
Rainbow Dash is then brought to reason. She realizes that her actions was going to destroy her candidacy, and her fragile state of mind threatened Scootaloo's life. She wasn't responsible enough to care for a filly. Then a letter from the Wonderbolts declared that if Rainbow Dash won the custody battle, she wouldn't be able to enter training. Stuck in limbo, she drops out of the fight.
Scootaloo is not only grief-stricken, she's angry because she believes that Dash selfishly dropped out so she can join the Wonderbolts. In part, she was right.
At the last hearing in July, custody is given to the Pies, with Pinkie as primary guardian. Rainbow and Pinkie meet up outside the Canterlot courthouse to apologize to each other. Their friendship is rebuilt. Scootaloo was about to confront Dash again, but then she reveals that she's leaving immediately to Cloudsdale. She leaves without saying goodbye.
The same day, a letter from the hospital reveals that Scootaloo has Aero Suspension, and she would never be able to fly normally in her lifetime.
