Celestia didn't take her sister's threats seriously. And so Luna, for multiple decades, planned out her upcoming lunar coup d'etat. When the time came, Celestia had luckily had the Elements of Harmony on hoof, and successfully foiled Nightmare's plan.

Yeah, I too feel that they should shed more light on this part of the story.
Because all jokes aside, the amount of information we have on this subject this comic might as well be 200% accurate.
